Firebug with Firefox 3 in Ubuntu Hardy Heron

Browsers, Ubuntu
Several months ago when I first tried out Firefox 3, I found that I couldn't get Firebug to work. At that time, I was still on 7.10 (Gutsy) and just rolled back to Firefox 2 and carried on about my business. Once I upgraded to 8.04 (Hardy), where its default Firefox is FF3, I tried again. I still had failures and no matter which "fix" I came across, I still was never able to open Firebug in a panel, but only in a separate window.

That all changed this morning! I was looking through packages and discovered that there is a Firebug package in the Ubuntu repos. I promptly uninstalled Firebug from the extensions settings in the Firefox and closed my browser. I went to terminal and typed:

$ sudo apt-get install firebug

... I then opened up Firefox 3 and BAM! It works exactly like it should. I have no idea what the difference is in this version of Firebug, but for whatever reason, my problems are solved.

Dave had you had any stability problems with firefox on Ubuntu? I'm on 7.10 and to be honest, firefox crashes around 3 times per day on average (with firebug installed but disabled) even after restarting my machine.

Usually happens when I ctrl t for a new tab. Gotta say it's reaaaaaally annoying :(

@Mike. I have the same problems with FF3 on 8.04. Sometimes it just keeps loading nothing, you can't scroll the page anymore and after a while I just end up doing a force quit. Very annoying. Hopefully this is fixed in the final release.

@Dave. :) I was jsut about to revert back to FF 2 because of the missing FireBug. But, depending on the crashes with FF 3 I might still do that. :(

Michael, that isn't something that I have experienced. I would be willing to bet that it is related to some plugin. Did you get FF from the repos? Just for a test, you might want to consider renaming ~/.mozilla to ~/.mozilla.bak and then trying it for a day with new settings. Perhaps you could then install one plugin at a time until you find the culprit. Just a thought anyway...

I upgraded Ubuntu from 7.04 to 8.04 this weekend. Unfortunately, mozilla has been a source of heartburn. All but my main email account in thunderbird were wiped out and most plugins were removed - even those that work just fine under the latest Thunderbird, like Lightning and New Mail Icon.

As for Firefox, also getting lots of crashing here. I uninstalled the firebug plugin I'd found, and installed via Synaptic Package Manager. I'll report if that helps, for the sake of others.
