Free Subversion hosting with Unfuddle.com

ColdFusion

As some of you know I used to be an advocate of CVSdude for subversion hosting on small projects. It was simple to setup, had decent management, and had a free basic account. It appears that these days they have done away with their free service all together, and their starter package is $5.99/mth as of the time of this entry.  While that is certainly affordable for any project worth doing, I like to shop around where I can and save pennies where I can.  In doing so, I came across Unfuddle.com, which we have found to be a great service!  (EDIT: After writing this entry, I was contacted by Guy Marion of CVSDude to inform me that they do indeed have a free service with a 2MB limit, in addition to free hosting for open source projects and non-profits, but it is no longer published on the home page.)

The project we are working on is tiny in disk space terms and the 15MB limit for their free account was not an issue for us, even including the Mach-II and ColdSpring frameworks we have under source control as well. They have a ticket management system, which we haven't used yet, but it appears quite comparable to Trac, and a really nice comfortable control panel (screenshot) for your project. Even the smallest projects, subversion is an invaluable tool and with free services such as this, there is no excuse to not use it!

Nice. I've been looking for something like this (read: Svn + free) for a long time. I'm now completely crushing on Trac+Svn, though, so I'm not sure I'll be able to take advantage.

It appears their ticket management is a 37signals app based on their description. The features seem quite similar to Trac other than the wiki, which sees limited use in most projects imo. With their more expensive package, there is even a time tracking piece that can be added in.

I don't know if you have taken a look at Assembla (http://www.assembla.com/tour) they do offer free svn and trac hosting. The trac side is pretty configurable with custom ticket fields and optional post-commit-hook script to link svn comments back to tickets.

Wow... those features are ridiculous. We will certainly look into that one David.

I just went down Edgewall's list (http://trac.edgewall.org/wiki/CommercialServices) until I found it. I have been relatively successful getting svn and trac adopted where I work and wanted the same for some personal projects.

My team sits on 3 continents and we now use Unfuddle to manage ALL of our active software projects.

Yesterday Unfuddle released its new Mac OS widget that makes my job even easier.

My suggestion is that everyone should go and open a free Unfuddle account and then download the free Mac OS widget.

Unfuddle is a great help to our industry.

We've been using one of Unfuddle's non-free accounts for several months now and have been very happy with the results. No server issues, and the ONE time I had to contact the Support guys (just to ask a question, before we set up the account), I got a very quick response, that answered my question in a direct, friendly way. Exactly what I look for in a vendor. :)
